Proper equipment

Your Bike

Your bike is your tool in our events and it is important that it is properly equipped for the safety of both you and other participants. Therefore, we have certain requirements and recommendations we would like you to take part of:

Your bicycle must, by law be equipped with:

• Bell

• Brakes

In the dark your bicycle, by law, must be equipped with:

• Front light with white or yellow steady light that can be seen clearly at a distance of 300 meters. The light may not flash.

• Rear light with steady red light that can be seen clearly at a distance of 300 meters. Note that Vätternrundan recommend a steady rear light, why a flashing light can be disturbing for the cyclists behind you.

• White reflector in front, separately or in the light.

• Red reflector in the back, separately or in the light.

• Orange or white reflectors at the sides – on the frame, on the spokes, or approved tires with reflective sides.

Bicycles, bicycle parts and bicycle accessories Not allowed in Vätternrundan events:

• Disc wheels, i.e. wheels that are covered

• So-called Mag wheels (wheel with “rotor blades”)

• Electric-bikes (in addition to Vätternrundan 100 km)>

• Recumbent bikes and hand bikes (see more detailed information below under headline Special bicycles and handlebars).

• Bikes with fixed gears, so-called Single speeds are permitted only if they are equipped with front and rear brakes as well as freewheel hub.

• Triathlon handlebars, time trial handle bars, aero bars, clip-ons, extensions bars, bull horns (see more detailed information below).

• Open bar ends

• Flashing front lights. Preferably, neither rear why this can be disturbing to cyclists behind you.

• Child bike seat

• Bicycles with more or fewer than two wheels.

• Bicycle trailer

Special bicycles and handlebars:

  • The need to use a recumbent bike, arm bike or a type of handlebar we normally do not allow in our events, require a special permission and a maximum 2 years old medical certificate, stating that this type of bike / handlebar must be used. Vätternrundan reserves the right to determine the acceptability of permits from case to case. Please, send an email to info@vatternrundan.se with your application for a license and a medical certificate attached.

Advices and tips from Vätternrundan

• Avoid bicycle basket or bag pack attached to the side of the carrier as it makes you difficult to pass for other cyclists.

• Give your bike lights new batteries before start, to avoid discharged batteries during the dark hours.

• Use a steady light for the rear light, while a flashing light can be disturbing for the cyclists behind you.

• Take care of the bike regularly. Here are some tips:

Clean and lubricate the bike regularly. If you have a manual for your bike, you can follow the instructions in it.

Check that the chain tension is suitable and that all screws and details are secured.

Ensure that brake pads and tires are not worn out.

Ensure that the lights works well, and that all reflectors are clean and intact. See the requirements above.

Ensure that tires with reflective materials are clean, otherwise, they have not fully reflex action.

The following types of handle bars are not allowed in our race:
Triathlon Handlebars, time trial handle bars, aero bars, clip-ons, extensions bars, bull horns, Spinachi type bars.
